Wow. A popular press article on digital music format that actually
raises good issues and doesn't focus on bigger must be better. And it's
in the New York Post of all places. I saw this posted on another forum.

thing that will benefit people,” Montgomery says. “I just object to
where science is being misrepresented.”

Truth Be Told: Neil's ability to hear and appreciate Pono ultra hi-rez
is more likely correlated to the strain of cannabis he enjoys for
listening to music. Always read the fine print.

Neil Young is a very good guitar player, and has written some great
songs, but he doesn't know squish-diddly about the physics of sound, or
about engineering. Using his name to hawk bigger-is-better audio is, as
people in the article say, simply a marketing ploy, like getting a
basketball star to sell shoes. Young's opinions about song composition
might have some relevance and meaning; his opinions about digital audio
engineering are worthless.

Dogberry2, I don't think this is a case of "using his name". I love him
but Neil has completely drunk the kool-aid on this one. Witness these
lyrics from "Driftin' Back" on -Psychedelic Pill- (2012):

-Don't want my mp3
Don't want my mp3

I'm driftin' back

When you hear my song now
You only get five percent
You used to get it all
You used to get it all-

The latest from CES is that Lincoln and Tesla are planing to offer Pono
because 24/192 is just what we need to make mobile listening all it can
be!

Oh, I agree, Neil Young is a *true believer*. Ignorant to nine decimal
places, but a hard-core believer nevertheless.

I read his recent book. It's filled with lots of garbage and idiocy,
demonstrating that Neil Young doesn't understand:

1) the difference between audio compression and data compression
2) the difference between a low-grade MP3 and a CD audio file
3) the inherent limitations of vinyl recordings
4) the concepts of noise floor or signal-to-noise ratio in audio
recording
5) the concept of a Fourier transform or the basics of the A-D and D-A
process
6) how a digital audio sampling rate is different from an analog audio
frequency

Basically, he's been fed a lot of superstitious audiophool bilgewater
and swallowed it whole. I'm sure if somebody told him that speakers
sound better when they're made with recycled love beads because they
have "absorbed cool vibes and the sound will be sweeter when those vibes
are set free", he'd believe it. He's a good musician, but a total hippie
crackpot.

As much as I agree with you regarding Young's misguided audio beliefs, I
will always respect Young for his total rejection of drum machines.
Basically he said that the "better" the drum machine the more like a
human drummer it sounds and so he got rid of the drum machines and went
back to using real live drummers. Score one for Neil and for music
lovers everywhere.
