Hello fellow audiophiles

Anyone uses Inguz, Convolver (http://convolver.sourceforge.net/) or
something else?

I have few peeks and deeps below 120Hz, I do not want full-scale RC..
I do not know if I want at all, experimenting today with Inguz was
awful

If anyone has positive expierence, please share it

Michael

I've had a DEQ2496 in my Transporter FX loop ever since it was enabled
in firmware. I would strongly recommend trying one over software-based
solutions. Make sure you get a mic too.

Inguz works fine. Inguz w/DRC is a bit more challenging. I spent a
bunch of time getting that up and functional....only to find that it
wasn't really what I expected.

I thought there were some small improvements in certain aspects of the
sound, at the expense of some larger issues that DRC was causing with
signal clipping, etc. Don't expect the massive "OMG" sonic
revelations that some have claimed on the internet. Ain't true unless
you had some serious sound problems beforehand.

In all....it was a lot of futzing around, and in the end it proved
mostly unsatisfactory for me.

The DEQ2496 on the other hand is a really cool box, utterly transparent
in the TPs digital FX loop and it's a lot of fun to play with. It's
not "DRC" but it does in fact work well at a rock bottom price. Don't
bother with the Auto-EQ. I think that feature is for entertainment
purposes only.

My thoughts...

I can't comment on Inguz as I haven't tried it yet. However you seem to
be talking about DRC in general... and certainly my experiences with the
TACT hardware/software solution are very different to the ones you
describe:

1) When properly setup there is no catastrophic fall-off outside of the
sweet spot - quite the opposite in fact, the sound is remarkably
consistent as you move around the room.

2) Clipping on peak boosts is easily avoided using the TACT or GV
software. You do need a clean preamp as the overall level has to be
reduced to avoid the clipping, so up to 10dB of makeup gain
post-processing is required from the pre-amp.

3) On my system it is a very significant improvement - biggest
impactive upgrade after the speakers and their active x-overs/amps.
Everybody who has heard me turn the DRC off has asked for it to go back
on. This includes my wife who is both the biggest critic of me spending
money on stuff and the biggest sceptic that my upgrades are actually
improvements...

4) It takes about an hour to do the measurements and fiddle with the
software - after that its truly a "fit and forget" solution.

Is it an "OMG" moment? - for me I'd say yes, in as much as it was a
much bigger improvement than changing DACS, for example. Yes, it does
depend how "bad" your room is in the first place and it's never going
to totally compensate for stone floors or too much glass - but it is
pretty darn good IMO. It does also help if your speakers have a
reasonable on/off axis response to begin with ( far too many don't).

Thanks for your responses.

I've been using Room EQ Wizard for half a year, that's how I know about
these peaks/deeps. I have all the necessary pieces, ECM8000 mic and
Tascam US-144 sound card, etc.

I do not want to buy (at this point) another hardware (DEQX, Behringer,
TacT, Lyngdorf..)

I think that software solution shall be superior. In the end, that's
what is running inside these HW boxes.

Michael,

The reason I advocate the hardware solution is that it is totally
transparent on the operation of the Transporter.

Any software solution (ie. processing on the server) will disable FF/RW.

The other issue is cost. And by "cost", I don't just mean monetary cost.
I am self-employed, work from home, and have 5 kids. I value my time. I
don't want to spend it messing around getting a software solution
working. My DEQ2496 cost < £100, which is less than two hours of my
professional time, so to me it was a no brainer.

Robin,

Working with SPDIF will introduce jitter.
Also (or same), once I for curiosity fed music into SPDIF digital input
of Transporter, and result was far worse then when using normally
through Ethernet jack.

I have a friend working with DEQ (successfully), it might be the
solution, might be not. I already have few boxes around the house...

At the moment, I just want to play with it a bit, understand what DRC
is about, then I will see.

Themis,
indeed I did not manage to get web UI working, but I did not try hard.
Inguz XML-based files are very simple and can be edited manually, or
using Transporter's remote

Is it possible to use Transporter with DEQ2496 in a loop as

Transporter (AES/EBU Digital Out) -> DEQ2496 (AES/EBU Digital Out) ->
Transporter ?

Does it work well?

Michael,

That's *exactly* what I have been suggesting you try.

The DEQ2496 only has optical and AES/EBU digital connections - I use
AES/EBU with a couple of bog standard balanced microphone cables.

It works well for me.

Ssshhhh! its a secret. AES/EBU was designed to use bog standard
microphone cables for use in professional studios. There is no need for
megadollar interconnects.

I probably have 30 suitable cables in lengths from 3 feet to 50 feet in
my basement/studio.

How do I activate this mode? Actually, Transporter must work with both
Ethernet and AES/EBU inputs in parallel!

If you search around here you'll find many experienced users of Inguz
DRC that consider it a crucial component in their systems. That being
said, there is a steep learning curve and frustration at the beginning
is part of the process. I have been using it for several years and
seem to get better outcomes each time I use it. If you have to place
speakers in a less than ideal location for practical reasons as I do it
can be a tremendous benefit.

It will effectively correct bass issues - but in my experience this can
sometimes reduce the impact of some recordings. It took me some time to
realize this, but sometimes that uneven measured LF response we hate to
see is simply part of what we expect from certain types of music and
venues. I've heard more than a few DRC users complain that the process
"takes their bass away." For example, the gentle LF rolloff Inguz often
gives me makes bass guitar lines much more definition, but sometimes
reduces the kick of a bass drum. I generally am willing to accept the
modest compromise, but sometimes turn off Inguz when I feel things are
sounding too "controlled". The other option Inguz offers is a flatness
control that allows you add back in some of the defects you've worked so
hard to correct. Its funny how you reach for it after all the effort.

Yes, sure.
The question is however not "how to install", but "how to patch" :-)

Once you install from InguzAudio, take the attached file and replace it
in Plugins/InguzEQ

well it feels like I have half installed it!
I can see an EQ icon in the Web UI but clicking it produces a 404 (page

My filetypes have all been changed to Inguzdsp and Inguzdsp is being

I think my attempt to manually install the plugin have not worked. It's
been a long time since I had to manually install a plugin - I've
probably not put it in the correct directory for 7.5...

You could say I'm against digital processing but I think bass EQ
satisfies the purist in me whilst giving a significant benefit for most
rooms. Long term I discovered I was unhappy with the "naturalness" of
the sound when frequencies above the bass were processed - although I'm
happy to admit this might be psychological!

In any case, I use Inguz for bass EQ and it works well. By adjusting
the overall bass response I was able to move the speakers further from
the back wall - this was arguably a very important though indirect
benefit.

Sure, I do not want to EQ above 100Hz either!
This effects tonality and overall representation.
I just want to correct few very specific points on the frequency scale,

Keep in mind that the "effects" may actually be positive. There seem
to be valid arguments in both the full range DRC and LF only DRC
approaches. Dismissing one approach without hearing it work in your
particular situation seems limiting. Give both methods a try and see
which one actually sounds best - intellectual concerns aside.

For my living room system, it's the same, one really nasty resonant
peak at ~55Hz, that I need to tame, but otherwise the frequency
response is pretty good. Try tuning the rest, and the cure can cause as
many problems as it tries to fix. I spent a weekend building and tuning
an analog notch filter for the sub-woofer (I run a satellite/sub type
system) and have been happy ever since.

A few threads started immediately after the release of 7.5 about
problems with playing apple lossless files. Apparently a shift to (or
away from - my head was starting to hurt following these threads) a
utility named faad has changed the way apple lossless is processed by
SBS.

I tried to install Inguz again under SBS 7.5. Everything went as
expected, but then I found no Inguz options for apple lossless or AAC
in the File Types menu. All of the other Inguz options were present.
Most of my library is in apple lossless to make the use of iPods more
convenient via iTunes. Does this mean my run with Inguz is coming to
an end? Reverting back to older SBS versions is not really an option
as I plan on purchasing a Touch sometime soon. I also don't want to
mess with SBS too much as I use a Boom as my alarm clock and need
stability there.

To michael123, andywright and others I will resume the installation
process.
I installed 7.5, the Touch and manually installed the latest InguzEQ
and InguzDSP, modified Michael's plugin.pm as Andy suggested and
replaced the original plugin.pm with the modified one. Are those steps
correct and complete?
I'm asking since I haven't succeeded. The Inguz isn't visible neither
in the Touch menu nor in the web interface. Any further suggestions?
Thanks, Chris.

Well, on SBS 7.5.0 on IE 8 with Silverlight installed the web interface
works! See the attachment.

And the menu items are all scattered randomly in the Home Menu item
selector on the Duet Controller, but they are all there (all the items
shown in the web interface, just all randomly mixed in with all the
possible Home Menu items to choose from... it seems to be lacking its
own "submenu"; the Inguz menu items are not collected and shown under
"extras").

My SB3 is not running right now, but I can check it later to see if and
how the Inguz menu items show up there.

I got it to work on both the Touch and in the web interface. Inguz
log.txt confirms it. My main problem was the lack of self registration
of the MAC address of the Touch. I manually edited the
custom-convert.conf adding the address and changed some settings for
the Inguz 9.32 and SS 7.5 in other Inguz configuration files files
and voilà.

Inguz plug-in is incredible. I discovered that for hi res files like
96/24, it detects the sampling rate and automatically converts the
filter wav file to that rate using sox !!! no worries for the sampling
rate of the music file .

Do share! Information about the changes to the configuration text
files, or even attach them to your post, I mean. That way the next
folks that want to use this great plug-in will have it easier. ;)

FYI. I got it working on the latest nightly 7.6. Not really sure what
happened. I first installed the vanilla version. Seemed to work, but I
didn't get the Inguz-options in file settings. Then installed the
patched Plugin.pm (with the wrong path) from this thread. This did not
work. I then went back to the original Plugin.pm - and automagically it
worked.

I havent tried room-correction, only eq,balance, tone controls etc.

Yes, I only use the normal plugin.pm, nothing needed to be changed to
make it work. The only caveat is that in order to assign the Inguz menu
items to my Controller I had to "gather" them so to speak from
throughout the list of available "Home Screen" menu options because
they were not all in one spot in their own submenu. The web interface
worked as designed with no extra intervention (other than installing
Silverlight) [This is on Windows 7 64bit]

I've got Inguz working with Squeezeboxserver 7.5.1 on Linux.

I didn't work at first so I ended up on a wild google chase through
many possible solutions - including a modified Plugin.pm but it turns
out the stock Plugin.pm worked.

The cause of my problem - permissions had to be opened up on
/usr/share/InguzEQ/error in addition to the file mentioned in the
install instructions, /usr/share/InguzEQ/log.txt. Then it worked. Hope
that helps.

When I say working I mean the actual DSP bit (I'm using EQ) and the EQ
menus on the SB3 itself. The settings in the web interface give an
error "404 Not Found:
plugins/Extensions/settings/plugins/InguzEQ/index.html", suggestions
welcomed. But I'm not bothered by that - I create by EQ .conf files by
hand anyway.

Does anyone have it working on Windows 7 (32 bit) and 7.5.0? Mine seems

Why oh why won't Logitech just build EQ in??????????

Good EQ is not simple to implement, it will require lot of computer
resources.
To complicate things - you will need separate EQ settings per channel
in order to use EQ as acoustic treatment

But Inguz does EQ consumes and negligible CPU time on my laptop. Most
people just want bass and treble, but frankly one you have done that
you may as well give a full EQ option ...

Do you have any experience of Inguz with Windows 7?

I have just installed Inguz for OS X on Squeezebox Server 7.5.1, but I
am experiencing some very strange interface problems.

It seems I can't use most of the increment arrows ...!

For example, I am trying to adjust the balance parameter "+" wise, but
I can only make the value negative. And once I have made it negative, I
can't adjust it the other way again.

Same thing for width, quietness, skew etc. etc.

Also, there is no inguz option in the file types playback field (under
"advanced").

What am I doing wrong? Is Inguz not compatible with 7.5.1?

You are doing it right. I was also surprised by this behaviour.
For ex the balance: first you can change the increments in one of the
Inguz settings file (don't remember which one now). At the beginning
you have access to +- 2dB range. Once you set -2dB and go back one step
in the menu and then return you will see that the range has increased to
-4dB in the direction you have chosen at the beginning (negative or
positive) It is nice once you have cached it. It is maybe not intuitive
at the beginning but it works within the limits of the display.
I'm wondering who made this display for the Touch, Hugh i.e. Inguz
himself?

Hi,

I am new to Inguz. Last night I tried Inguz with my SB Classic, and
worked perfectly. My room acoustics is very bad, and I need to tame low
frequencies, mainly at 40hz.
I have few newbie questions:
1) Does Inguz work with Duet (with the Controller)?
2) Does Inguz work with the Touch?
3) I also have a Sonos. Does the Sonos+Deq2496 combo a better
alternative?
4) Does the Deq2496 compatible with REW5 (I looked in their site with
no confirmation)??

Thanks

If you mean automatic download of filters through MIDI interface into
DEQ2496 - then no.

Entering parameters is quite simple, what takes time is proper tuning.
It is similar process to the piano tuning.
You run few same signals over and over, and make one adjustment at a
time, until all test tones give you more or less same volume level.
Although I did measured my room few times with REW, when I got DEQ2496,
I tuned by ear.
Why? Because ear sensitivity is not flat

Inguz is a plug-in of the SBS server a software; it is not relied to the
hardware part. So it will work with the Duet if you use the right
software version.
Inguz stopped the development of the plug in. It worked like a charm
until SBS 7.3, after that you need some modification in the settings.
They are documented on SB forums.
Make a search on this forum, a Touch forum and Third party forum. I use
Inguz with the Touch and SBS 7.5.0

I decided to redo my sweeps (figured since I got the Touch I'd generate
another set of correction files), but I ran into a problem I never saw
before.

When I did the impulseprep on the left and right sweep files it
generated the ImpulseResponse wav file but then dropped out. When I
looked at the prep.log file it indicated that the distance and timing
for the right file were both 0. I opened that sweep file in Audacity
and it looks fine, not much different than the left file (which showed
valid numbers in the log file). Anybody know what gives?

Do you think the Deq2496 is a better option than Inguz?

I have a friend who used some home-made SPDIF-AES cable with DEQ, so I
think that's possible. Although personally I do not like these
adapters.
Also, I do not know if your DacMagic will sync on AES stream since it
is bit different from SPDIF.. So Optical TOSLINK might be safe bet

My view was that Inguz would take time and some messing around to set up
& get workng, which is fine if you have the time to do that. I don't, so
I picked up a s/h DEQ which I had plugged in and operational within 10
minutes.

I'm currently using homemade AES cables (XLR plugs) and it works just
fine, although I have a couple of Toslink cables on order to see if I
can hear any difference.

My suggestion would be to try and pick up a s/h DEQ and give it a go.
You can always sell it on if it's not for you.

like the Sonos because of the excelent controller and stable wireless
connection).

Unfortunately I can no longer get Inguz to work now that I'm using a
Touch. I have had a DEQ 2496 for a couple of years, but now only use it
for the sub because of its negative effect on the sound. I have a lousy
sounding room (bass-wise) and until I got the Touch and had to upgrade
the SB version, Inguz did the job of taming the worst peaks in a very
transparent way.
When using the DEQ, the sound takes on a dry, almost harsh quality
which is OK in the short term but becomes impossible to live with.
I hope Inguz is resurrected for the current Squeexebox software,
otherwise I'll probably have to save for a DEQX or possibly go to a Mac
with Amarra or Pure Music with the Flux Epure (or similar) plugin.
Cheers,
Riddo

How did you use 2496 (digital loop, analogue connections)?
How did you calibrate it?

Just yesterday, I've spent half an hour to play few tracks with DEQ in
bypass & Transporter's FX loop AES/EBU vs. Transporter's FX loop
disabled.
Could not hear a thing...

I'm not sure what you mean by "calibrate", but I've measured the room
using Stereophile Test CD2 and an RS meter, and then using the
Parametric for the gross peaks, and a little bit of GEQ for some. No
boost. It's encouraging that you're getting good sound.I'll have to
check if I can find anything I've done wrong, although there is no
input clipping on the DEQ, so I can't think of any obvious reason for
the grainy sound.
Cheers,
Graeme

Nevertheless, you aren't the only one who is getting good results, so
perhaps somewhere in the settings I'm doing something wrong. I will
definitely give it another try and keep it very simple so far as EQ
settings are concerned. I am still hoping that Inguz is revived
though.
Thanks for your help, Michael.

There seem to be a bunch of bits and pieces scattered around from

Hi

Installed it as per the web instructions. Questions/Problems:

1. It doesn't appear in menu interface anywhere (tried with Touch and
with Squeezeplay);

2. In the SBS Web interface (using 7.52) the EQ link appears, but when
I open it the

"EQ -> Settings… -> Test Signals… -> Left/Right Identifier"

item mentioned in the measurement instructions isn't there.

Other items mentioned in the instructions also seem to be missing form
the pages

Note: I'm using windows XP and have Net Framework 2 installed.

For those who are comfortable with linux and writing command-line
instructions, brutefir / brutefirDRC works with 7.5.x server and
7.5/7.6 SBTouch. What is lacking compared to brutefirDRC on older SB is
the ability to select filters via the remote.

I have brutefir room correction running on SBTouch, streaming flac or
pcm at various sample rates and on a 2-yr old 2-core server (3GHz),
brutefir only consumes 2% per channel for 44.1kHz audio, 4% per channel
on 96kHz audio. I understand fir correction on Windows is heavier on the
CPU.

I have not heard a system with Inguz, but the measurement and
correction are similar, so when working to spec, I expect brutefir and
Inguz to give similar results. Some posts compared DEQ2496 v Inguz. I
can say from my experience that Behringer digital EQ is way inferior to
brutefir for room correction. It veils the sound, and dialing in eq is
just guesswork. I have some bad room modes due to hard flooring, walls
and ceiling, and digital room correction was always needed. Going just
the passive room treatment route would have made part of my listening
area (main hall in the home) look a mess.

Not sure what version you're running but the web UI doesn't even load
for me in Chrome 10.0.612.1 dev using squeezeboxserver-7.6.0-0.1.31644.

Also, I hid the player panel and it won't come back.

If you want to use just EQ here my tips.

1. On Linux the stock install instructions and plugin.pm worked but I
needed to change permissions on one file (see
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=558141&postcount=40).

2. The web interface (and the SB plugin sometimes) do give me problems.
If that happens, just edit the *.conf files for the EQ presets by hand!
Then you can just select the relevant preset from the SB menu. Doing
this, you can add as many EQ bands as you want. On Linux the .conf
files are in /usr/share/InguzEQ/Settings. If you're using EQ to correct
room modes then editing a file once is a lot easier than trying to get a
bunch of other stuff working each time you upgrade the server.

Regards, Darren

Thanks for your reply, Darren.
I went through the whole Inguz installation routine. In server
settings,
EQ is ticked.
File types have not changed (no Inguz associations)
In the web interface frequencies cannot be specified.
In IE the message "cannot initialize Silverlight: playerid is
undefined"
In FFox I get the logo "Get Silverlight" but it is already installed.
There is nothing at all via the SB Touch screen itself.
I have restarted both the server and the PC after each installation
step, but still no joy.
Does anybody have this working on a windows machine?
Cheers,
Graeme

I don't know about Vista or Win7, but I have Inguz working under XP with
7.6.

The only thing that doesn't work is the version of the settings page
accessed via the Settings - Plugins web UI page - but that isn't
required for anything anyway.

I've modified index.html to fix the "save" button for saving presets
and modified plugin.pm to support the generation of a convert.conf file
that supports FLAC and (crucially) FLAC transcoding (+MP3) ONLY as I
don't use any other file formats.

The filetypes setting no longer shows "inguz" as I am going
FLAC-SOX-INGUZ-FLAC so it shows flaac/sox (twice in my case - once per
player).

This should give you enough of a starting point.

just install inguz manually, then replace the three files (in their
respective folders) with the modded ones. Then restart sbs.
Silverlight 4.x MUST be installed as a Browser add-on by the way.

When you play a track, you should now see 2 instances of FLAC.exe,
SOX.exe and InguzDSP.exe all running - if so, then Inguz is installed
correctly.
The Silverlight problem will prevent the Inguz settings page loading
properly (from Home Menu - Extras).

I believe that Silverlight needs to be installed under a User with
Admin privileges and it should be the same user that SBS runs under...

One thing to try is to install Silverlight then re-install the latest
versions of your Browsers...

I've now tried all of the above except where do I look to see Flac ,
Sox and Inguz are running? In the Squeezebox server logs?
I still can't get Silverlight working and your revised plugins won't
play my high-res files, so I'm checking Google searches on the SL
problem - it may be that it's my 64 bit OS that's the problem, although
I had everything running OK before I bought a Touch and had to install a
later version of the server software.
While I'm saving my pennies for either a DEQX or a Mac based server
with Amarra/Pure Music with EQ plugins, I'll keep trying to get this
one to work, as when it did it sounded great.
I appreciate your help with this Phil, and everybody else. Any more
ideas please keep them coming as there must be plenty of us who would
love to use Inguz.
Cheers,
Graeme

You may also want to check out brutefirdrc which provides room
correction and EQ just like the Inguz plugin. It only runs on
unix/linux, which I appreciate may be a problem for some users, but at
least it has -two- active developers.

Thanks Toby.
I had a brief look at it some time ago, and it seemed complicated, but
at least I'll only have to learn to use it once and I could save a lot
of money compared to the alternatives.
Cheers,
Graeme

I'd like to be audacious, and claim that it has 2+ 0.2(me) active
developers :). I am active focusing on brutefirdrc playback on SBTouch,
esp. pcm playback, where the Touch receives room-corrected pcm, and the
hard work is done on the server.

Full 2-channel drc on my 2-core server eats up about 6% of cpu (96/24
audio), so my server has the potential of sending room-corrected hi-res
audio to every listening room at home. 44/16 audio needs about half the
cpu.

Hi Mervin,
Where is the best place for a complete beginner to learn about using
brutefirdrc for my SB Touch?
Cheers,
Graeme

If you really a complete beginner, including new to linux, then the
learning curve would be:

- install ubuntu (desktop edition) on your pc
- get familiar with ubuntu (file system, including some basic console
commands)
- install brutefir (the basic engine) and set up 1-2 filters as test
cases, eg. a simple parametric filter, to get familiar with how
brutedir reads an audio stream, applies filter(s), then outputs the
filtered stream
- use brutefirdrc instructions
(http://klaasprause.com/brutefirdrc/installation/) to install
brutefirdrc, up to step 4. Step 5 onwards are for older squeezebox
remotes. At this stage I can send the skeleton instructions that Klass
(brutefirdrc author) provided me, and some sample scripts
- measure, generate filters (over and over again until things sound
right, no clipping, etc, etc)

Realistically this is not a short learning curve. I was familiar
(intermediate user level) with linux, and took 2-3 leisurely weeks to
get the feel of brutefir (while waiting for measurement mic), then
another couple of evenings to get the first track playing via
brutefirdrc.

I expect Inguz would be a little more straightforward, but measurement
and filter generation / tweaking learning curve is likely to be
similar.

Thanks Mervin,
Given my inability to get Inguz working with Touch - it's OK on older
Slimserver versions with my SB3 - installing and learning Linux might at
least work for me if I can find the time! It has been one of those
things I've been meaning to do for years, so now I have some
motivation.
Cheers,
Graeme

Graeme - whilst playing a track, look in Task Manager (or whatever that
is called in Vista etc)

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
Touch(wired/XP) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Pekin Tuner, Townsend
Supertweeters, Blue Jeans Digital,Kimber Speaker & Chord Interconnect
cables
Kitchen Boom, Outdoors: SB Radio, Harmony One remote for everything.

Thanks Phil,
I did look at Task Manager, and there was no Inguz operating. If I
have time this weekend I might have another go at it. Perhaps I'll have
more luck with 7.6.
Cheers,
Graeme

This works brilliantly on my win7 laptop. Thanks very much for the
post. Do you know if it is a simple matter to get it to work with BBC
iPlayer and other radio stations? Or would this be opening a can of
worms. Not sure if the processing is the same for radio as for the
music library, or in fact if Inguz ever worked with BBC iPlayer.

For anyone having problems with the Web UI after installing michael123's
patch, try this;

in Plugins/InguzEQ/Plugin.pm, lines 742 to 747;

change Slim::Web::Pages::addPageFunction(....

to;

Slim::Web::Pages->addPageFunction(....

(ie, replace the "::" with "->" after "Pages")

This has fixed the web UI for me.

Andy.
