Discussion:
What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?

I'm currently feeding my Linn Unidisk SC a steady stream of flac files
via toslink, and it works fine. The performance is - to my ears - on
par with playing the original disks in the Unidisk. As an aside, a
second squeezebox feeds an analog signal to an older Rotel/B&W set-up in
the kitchen/dining room, and that works fine too.

Seeing all the recent reviews of DAC's with asymmetric (apodizing)
filters - like Ayre and Meridian - and hearing the new Linn DS units
makes me think there's still potential room for improvement.

So, as a poll, what kind of outboard DAC do you use with your
squeezeboxes?

Secondly, has anyone switched from 'my' setup to something else, and
had an increase in performance? If so, what did you try?

Thanks,
JBC

Currently using a Benchmark DAC into my Modwright pre. I'm quite happy

I have a Transporter, 2 Squeezebox Classics and one Squeezebox
Receiver.

The Transporter uses the internal DAC

One Squeezebox Classic uses the internal DAC of my Marantz home theater
receiver and sounds great.

The other Squeezebox Classic and the Squeezebox Receiver use the
internal DACs in my two Headroom Desktop amps. One of these Headroom
Desktop amps has Headrom's "Max" DAC in it and the other has the plain
vanilla Desktop DAC in it. Both setups sound very nice.

I'm looking forward to picking up a Touch once they are finally
released since all of my external DACs (the Marantz and both Headroom
units) will work with a 24bit/96kHz digital input.

Thanks for the replies.

So far, the two 'DAC's' that I've heard that I've been impressed with
are the Linn DS units (not cheap!) and the Ayre C5Xe-MP. Maybe there
isn't a cheaper way to get equivalent sound.

Thanks,

Plenty imho. I advice you not to spend more than 300$ on a recent, new
dac.
Also, don't buy a second-hand dac that was made before year 2000,
except if you know what you're doing. ;)

I'm getting excited about the prospect of modding my X-DAC v3. 468GBP
(780 USD on our side of the pond) is rather dear but I'd probably do it
in stages. Would you recommend the clock first (as Audiocom suggests on

My main setup uses a DEQX / triamped Magnepan 3.6r. The DEQX does all
the DSP as well as 3 D/A's per channel.

In another rooms I use a Cambridge DAC Magic for my Quad ESL-57's, and
in another room a Musical Fidelity VDAC on Red Rose Music "Classic"
speakers. Various tube, hybrid, and class-A solid state amps used-
depending.

I also have two DAC/ headphone amp / preamps from Audio_GD- the
COMPASS and the FUN, but I have not used these with speakers. Their
A/D's are quite good and use all-discrete analog sections (no IC
opamps) as well as fantastic power supplies. They might be excellent
as DAC/pre's but I've just never tried them. Build quality on the
Audio_GD line is fantastic. I'll get around to it some day.

Now that the Touch is available, I have to say that the Touch feeding
the Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor via coax is really awesome.
The Dodson is one of the top three DACs I have ever heard as well as
being the only one of the three I could afford or justify buying. It
sounds more neutral, nature, full bodied, and unrestrictive then DACs
costing 5 and 6 times what it does. As I said, I have only heard two
DACs that I think sound better then it and one can buy a nice house for
what those two DACs cost.

For those looking to use Squeezebox with a DAC, IMO one can't go wrong
feeding ones DAC with S/PDIF Coax from a Touch.

No, I'm not a veil is lifted Audiophile type. Being an Engineer, I am a
more of what the actual difference is or what is NOT being added by the
equipment type of audiophile. All I want from my playback is for it to
sound as close to what was recorded as possible, nothing added nothing
removed. Proper Soundstage and a 'Live' recording are the important
thing for me, nature, neutral, and alive. The meaning of 'Black' for me
is only the absence of noise and by-products from my component path that
those components could have added to the actual music that was recorded.
IOW, a device can't make anything 'Blacker' just because somebody thinks
it is better. But a better component can be 'Blacker' then another
component because it adds less/no by-products or has less noise, IE
cleaner, purer. So again its not 'making' it blacker, the listened to
recording seems blacker because less is being 'added' in the path from
source to speaker.

Must be why I like the Ayre Acoustics MX-R Mono Blocks so much, zero
feedback fully balanced, clean, pure, nature, neutral. I can tell you
one thing after having a KX-R at the house for 10 days, I am not a SS
guy when it comes to pre-amps, but if I had $19K that didn't need to be
used for anything the KX-R would be my next audio component purchase.

Currently Peachtree Nova, but plan to move that to the bedroom and get
something else for the main system. It's nice to see what others are
using.

I use a Benchmark DAC-I, which I like quite a bit(s/pdif out from TOUCH
to Benchmark coax-in). But I should add that I had the Benchmark in my
main system before acquiring a Transporter (currently in use). So I
wouldn't have bought the benchmark just for its current use with the
TOUCH (it's merely at a weekend place driving a set of audioengine A5
speakers; obvious overkill for needing a benchmark DAC).

Your weekend place is just 'More' audiophile then my weekend cabin,
that's all. I also have a pair of AudioEngine A5s but only being driven
by a Touch using TinySC with 1TB USB drive. I have an old router in the
kitchen so the Boom and SB Radio I have there can be feed off the
Touch. Its back in the mountain and deep in the woods so no Internet,
just a private WiFi Network with no outside connectivity or even a
Computer.

But in the end, its about the Music anyway.

Sorry I didn't see your question until now. I'm driving Genelec HT208s.
I haven't really made the comparison but I'm happy with how it sounds.

I recently switched to the Benchmark HDR from a PS Audio DAC III. Before
that, I had a Bel Canto (not the $3k one, the earlier $1k one). The
Benchmark brought a significant improvement in detail and
imaging.Really across the board improvement. So much so that I now will
sometimes also use it with my McCormack UDP CD player, which many people
like. I find the Benchmark better than the McCormack's internal DAC --
not hugely better, but if it's a really well recorded album and I
really want to listen deep, I use the Benchmark.

Anyway, SB + Benchmark is mighty tasty.

Agree 100%
I moved to a Benchmark PRE HDR and (to my ears) it is a superb product.
I use it with relatively low cost signal sources. Little Dot CDP, Denon
1940 for DVD-A and Touch
I replaced a Cyrus DAC XP which (again to my ears) was not in the same
league.

I also have a humble CA Dacmagic which shoots above its weight and can
outperform the Cyrus on certain sources.

Its a fast changing scene in the DAC word and I read some of the newer
low cost DACs perform extremely well

Specifically, how do you use the OPPO as a transport sending digital to
the DAC? I assume it is the latest firmware for the OPPO Bluray you
are talking about. Do you have to use a Media Smart server to do this,
through the Network option on the OPPO?

When using my Transporter, I use the internal DAC and the XLR Balanced
outs.

Most of my Squeezeboxes use their internal DACs.

I feed an SB3 Toslink digital link to an Adcom GFR-700HD and it sound
fairly good.

I feed a Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor from either an SB3 or my
Transporter Coax S/PDIF. This is a killer combination and sounds
terrific (bit of over kill in my opinion and would not do it if I didn't
already own the Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor). The Dodson is
the DAC that I used with my Esoteric CD Transport which I no longer need
and have sold.

My only recommendation would be to use the Coax S/PDIF instead of the
Toslink if you are looking for audio improvement.

Until recently, I was using:

Transporter digital output connected to the digital input of my Mark
Levinson 390S (but connecting directly to the pre-amp for higher
resolution files); and

Squeezebox Receiver connected to the digital input of my 5103 (in a
different system).

However, I have now purchased a Linn Akurate DS, and have moved the
Transporter to the second system, and am now using its own DAC,
connecting it to the line input of the 5103.

My impressions have been that, for 44.1kHz / 16-bit files, the ML DAC
is somewhat superior, but that the Transporter's own is materially
better than the 5103's.

(The ADS does not have a digital output, but in any of the comparisons
I have done, it is significantly better than any of the other
combinations I have tried in my main system.)

Seriously though, the new Benchmark w/ RC is not bad, it has a

Now I need to figure out the tech tricks to get this comp dac combo
running to max performance. All help is welcome.

I ran the Transporter through Meridian's HD621 apodizing upsampler and
to be honest I didn't hear much difference at all. Now perhaps the
apodizing upsample in the 808.3 or 861V6 or if my music choice was
different I must have different results.

I have been using the transporter digital output into a Weiss Medea D/A
with superb results, very pleasing indeed.

The current money seems to be on the Alpha D/A, although it's such a
shame that the Levinson 390S couldn't handle the higher bitrates, I
loved that player!

Now experimenting with the TS feeding a NAD M2 which can take up to
192kHz (although this rate is beyond the Transporter). With 24/96
recordings sounding so incredibly involving I can only think that
24/192 will be adopted soon - I just wish that "normal" Radio 2 type
artists would release their high res studio masters for download

For the ultimate quality I'd like to try a Lynx pro sound card from a
PC music server using the Weiss upsampling algorithm software on the
fly but I haven't the heart to replace the TS as yet, the user
interface is so good and the extended system of Booms and Touch are so
user friendly for guests...

Thanks to all for the replies - lots of different options being used.

I started the thread to get alternate ideas.

I finally bit the bullet and went with a Linn Majik DS. It does both
the digital streaming and the DAC. The FLAC files get streamed
directly to it from my NAS via ethernet cable, and it outputs an analog
signal to my preamp. With a Squeezebox server plug-in (Skweezy DS), I'm
able to have the Linn DS 'copy' the function of my Squeezebox (even
though they're not physically connected), so I still have the interface
I know and like.

To me, it's a big sound improvement over the SB3 feeding my Unidisk SC
(as a DAC) via S/PDIF. Whether that's due to better control of jitter
in the incoming data stream, better DAC, or a combination of the two is
hard to say.

Best,
JBC

Oh, forgot the second system in the kitchen/dining room....

SB3 digital output (S/PDIF) to a Peachtree nova, and a pair of B&W
bookshelf speakers. It actually sounds quite good.

I've got a Touch connected to a Peachtree Nova via coax, and a pair of
PSB Imagine towers. Sounds really good for such a simple system.

Probably the Linn DAC and no external s/pdif cable. The new setup
removed two interface points and a cable.

I am currently waiting for the new Wadia 121 to come out before making a
final decision on a new dac. I almost ordered a Lavry DA-10 about a year
ago but then read about the new Wadia which at the time was due out
early 2010, never happened. I have just emailed wadia again and then
now tell me its almost done now and should be out by the end of the
year (will wait and see on this though!).

Are there any more options out there at around the £1000 mark apart
from Lavry DA-10, Benchmark or this new Wadia 121 that are worth a
demo? I would look for a second hand Naim dac but they seem to go for
almost the RRP on ebay, which is pushing my budget just a bit too far.

then on to a Rogue Cronus Magnum with NOS small signal tubes playing
amazing holographic sound through a pair of Salk Songtowers.

I am currently on the verge of buying a Wyred4sound Dac-1, but I might
just stay with what I have....'cause it is surprisingly good.

I had a demo of a Naim Dac and a Cyrus Dac XP with my Touch. The Naim
killed the Cyrus across the board but no surprise as its more money
without the pre built in.

Both these dacs were out of my price range really and I was only having
a listen out of curiosity of what the Touch would sound like through
them. I was also comparing the Touch to a Niam HDX both running through
the Naim dac and the Touch wasn't miles away from the HDX (pleasant
surprise).

The thing that struck me though was the Naim dac could play direct from
a USB port on the front, which is probably a better method of playback
that any external source from a purely audio perspective. There is no
screen and only play pause and skip forward and back controls so a bit
hard if you had a lot of music on one stick. I am now thinking of
having about 10 small USB sticks with my rotating current favourite
records on that I could swap and play direct on the dac and then also
have the Touch there as a more expanded catalogue. By avoiding the need
to upgrade from a Touch to a better source (by using direct usb pen
drives) I could then push my dac budget up to the Naim dac.

Is this a mad plan, any thoughts on this welcome.

At the moment;

Linn Klout, EPOS ES25, Cyrus AV Master (to be changed to a better pre
when funds allow), Linn K600, Atlas Titans, SB Touch.

The Naim DAC will be the best part of the system by far, but im hoping
I will get at least 20 years use out of it! I have now put a deposit
down on one and managed to haggle another Atlas Titan interconnect for
free into the deal.

After some posting on the Naim forum I an now convinced the Naim DAC
and a USB stick should sound as good as a £10k cd player, and it can
play 32bit 768kHz! If you look at it like that its a real budget (£2k
budget?!) giant killer.

I have connected my SB2 to a kit from analog metric. This kit uses a
very old dac, the TDA1541A. I am used to the sound of this dac as my cd
player (Philips CD880) has the same dac, and I like the sound of it. As
case I used an old philips cd player, took out all stuf and managed to
build the new dac inside.

Have used a few DAC's with my SB3 and Touch, the first was the CA

(upgrade version, using OPA627) and found the ZeroDAC better, then
replaced the ZeroDAC with an Audi-GD DAC-19MK3 which I have been most

The Touch has both Toslink and Coax digital outs as well as Stereo
Analog RCAs plus a mini headphone jack. BTW, all are active at the same
time so the Touch can drive more then one source if need be.

Yes. Might not be a life-changing improvement for you. Certainly bigger
than regrinding the edges of CD's, zapping them with UV, cryo-freezing
them or putting litle stones or clocks in your room ... :-)
