Discussion:
Clock in for Transporter

Can any experts tell me will it be big improvement if I connect M2Tech
EVO Clock to my Transporter (plug in World Clock In). However, because
M2Tech can't make output as Master Clock, any suggestion for Master
Clock which is good match with Transporter?

I'm no expert, but I think the only meaningful way to use the clock
input of the TP, is when using the digital output of the TP and slaving
it off a DAC with Word Clock out. Otherwise, you are likely to end up
with increased jitter instead of reducing it.

There is only one situation where the word clock in is useful: you have
a DAC with a very low jitter internal clock AND it can output a word
clock derrived from that internal clock. You connect one of the digital
outs from the TP to the DAC and the word clock from the DAC to the TP.
This "slaves" the TP to the clock in the DAC.

Note that there are problems with this setup, the TP runs at the sample
rate of the DAC, so you have to choose the sample rate at the DAC, not
the source of the music. For example if your DAC is sending out a
44.1KHz word clock the TP can ONLY play music at 44.1 (because it is
slaved to the DAC). If you want to play a 96 KHz file you must either
change the frequency of the wordclock coming out of the DAC, or resample
the 96 file in the server.

You have to be careful with undertsanding what is meant by a word clock
and a master clock. A word clock is a stream of pulses at the frequency
of the sample rate, 44.1KHz, 48KHz, 96KHz etc. The term "master clock"
has two different meanings: 1) a word clock that is connected to
multiple devices, thus synching them all together, thus it is the
"master". 2) a high frequency clock running at a much higher frequency
than the sample rate, common ones are 11.2896MHz, 12.288MHz, 22.5792MHz,
24.576MHz. These numbers sound weird but they are multiples of the
common sample rates, 11.2896MHz is 256 X 44.1KHz.

The TP only accepts a wordclock, NOT a high frequency master clock. Thus
if the DAC just outputs a high frequency master clock you cannot use it
with the TP.

Thanks for valuable comments. I guess I should forget world clock-in and
external master clock now. What if I use an external DAC likes Weiss
DAC2 or Northstar DAC 32, can it help for significant improvment ?

I am using a Transporter slaved to a external DAC (Mytek Stereo 192) and
it work perfectly.
Clocking the transporter to the DAC (using worldclock) is an improvement
compared to only feeding the DAC in 'sync' mode.
I was quite surprised myself by the sound improvement, as this DAC is
known for good jitter rejection, and the Transporter is not a really
'dirty' digital transport.

The only drawback of this solution is that I have to manually change the
DAC clock according the files samplerates (if I play 96k files after
44.1 ones and vice versa). Well, just like selecting the speed between
33 / 45rpm vinyl :)

I tried to use my Transporter slaved to an external DAC ( Mytek
Brooklyn).

I was unable to find clock settings for my transporter Transporter.

I have read that this option should be found under settings/audio but it
is not available on my Transporter

Any help would be appreciated.

Garym

Thank you for this helpful post.

Unfortunately, when I open LMS and go to 'Settings'/ 'Player' I get a
message that 'the web page cannot be found'!

Other sections of LMS seem to be working, apart from 'Player' and
'advanced'.

Hmmm. Odd. Not sure what would cause the webGUI not to show those
webpages. Maybe someone else has a suggestion about solving that issue.
Have you tried from different browsers (Chrome or firefox or IE).
