Seems it can up-sample turds into diamonds.

Yes, the kind of magic called "marketing" :)

Julf is 99% correct - the missing 1% is that by using "marketing" Sony
is calling graphic frequency equalization, which I am 100% sure is all
the "magic" that is involved, “DSEE HX”.

Pure 100% marketing BS

Oh wait I'm supposed to wait until some audio magazine runs a few tests
on the actual Sony equipment and draws the exact same conclusion but
there is absolutely no need to wait since what Sony is claiming is 100%
impossible. So a new, fancy name for graphic frequency equalization is
all that is involved. Magic trick revealed!

Way back when I was studying for my mechanical engineering degree a
professor taught us that whenever someone claims to have invented a
perpetual motion machine one can be 100% certain that the machine is a
scam. All that is needed to prove that the machine is a fake is just a
little honest testing. The same rule applies when someone claims to be
able restore lossy compressed audio or video back to the level of
uncompressed audio or video. It simply can not be done.

Guys, I feel like we're in some kind of audio time warp...

We rehash PCM 24/192 for the on-line world (DVD-A --> HDTracks) starting
~2009
We rehash DSD64 for the on-line world (SACD --> DSD64 downloads)
starting ~2012
We now rehash the *super tweeter* in concert with the hi-res experience
in 2014...

I have a sneaking suspicion that this will all commercially fail much
faster than the 1st time round in the early 2000's. At least back then
things *felt* new with the hi-res formats giving genuine excitement and
early adopters had a chance to experience it all for themselves. (Maybe
Pono will be the poster child come end of year?)

The only thing left after this round of push into high-res to squeeze as
much as they can from the consumer with old music is to bite the bullet
and admit all that really matter is how well music is recorded and
mastered in the first place. Maybe then we can get somewhere fresh with
truly high quality audio rather than DR7 HDTracks releases in 24/96...

Of course I could be totally wrong and by this time next year, everybody
and their grandma will be talking about how great Pono is, Neil Young
becomes a billionaire, and Blue Coast Records expanding their DSD
servers with audiophiles clamouring for more!

...Neil Young becomes a billionaire..
You mean he's not already a billionaire?

Only joking, I know he's -*only-* a multimillionaire.

Neil does like to spend a lot of cash on favourite projects, like
LincVolt, Lionel trains, etc. Since new music is not as plentiful as in
the past, and touring becomes more difficult or less appealing, he
probably needs a new income stream!
