I received an email from audiogon about a musical sampler to test
equipment.
"At Audiogon, our goal is not only to provide a safe marketplace for
your evolving system, it’s also to give you the tools to elevate the
hobby. This Wake Up Your Ears!!! sampler contains hand-selected tracks
designed to aid in training your ears to actively listen while
showcasing your audio components. While listening, you may find that you
need to make some system tweaks in order to fully appreciate the
capabilities of your high-performance gear.

If you want to hear how good a speaker or headphone can sound you have
to play great sounding recordings.* If the recording isn’t up to snuff
no speaker or headphone can make it sound better than it really is.*
Chesky recordings are free of dynamic range compression, processing and
other forms of studio trickery, so they more accurately portray the
sound of music than most mainstream recordings.

The Audiogon Wake Up Your Ears! Sampler features hand-selected tracks
powered by Chesky recordings, designed to help train your ears to
actively listen while showcasing your audio components."

The link to purchase:

It is $5 and is available from HDTracks. I was thinking about getting
it to try some of these high sample rate tracks, and who knows maybe I
will find a new artist I like.

I make no recommendation for or against this sampler, but I thought it
might be something the readers might find of interest.

Paul

Well, it is at least an affordable way to try out the binaural
recordings - not everybody's cup of tea. As for trying out high sample
rate, the problem is that there aren't identical normal sample rate
versions to compare against.

I bought the 96/24 sampler and played the tracks last night. Can someone
tell me what I should be listening for? Do I need headphones?

The Chesky stuff may well be beautifully recorded, it's just a shame
that it's devoid of anything worth listening to.
Ah well!

I've always been mystified by the claims that Chesky is beautifully
recorded. Maybe it's a good product to be used to test one's system, but
I've heard many much better recorded mainstream tracks that lay no claim
to the audiophile grade products, and yet sound way better than anything
I've heard on the Chesky label.

One of the tracks ("Edgar the Barber", 32 seconds) is, according to the
Audiogon description, intended to be listened to with headphones.
Perhaps there are others?

You're not confusing earphones with earplugs are you? ;)

Figured for $5 I'd try the 24/96 version. Haven't had time to listen on
my main system, but I converted a copy to CD and listened in the car
today. The recording was certainly full-range and dynamic, but have to
say I used the "next-track" button on the CD player much more heavily
than normal.

Once again, the stereotype about audiophile demos is proved true.
