Discussion:
Linn Numerik has died

I have been feeding an SB3 into a Linn Numerik (then onto a Kairn, Klout
and Kabers (passive)) for years and been very happy. My Numerik has just
died mid track. My options are now:

1) try to get the Numerik repaired. Linn no longer support so I need to
find someone who could do this. Cost unknown.
2) find a new Numerik. They go for about £300-400 on ebay when they pop
up.
3) find a new DAC. The world has probably moved on since the Numerik
came out. What are the alternative DACs these days that would be as good
or better? An Emotiva Stealth seems well reviewed.

I have been out of the loop for years listening to music rather than
upgrading :-).

Thoughts and suggestions?

It's a 20+-year old piece but still I'm surprised Linn would leave you
high and dry. Couldn't they suggest a local authorized repair shop?
Granted I'm cheap, but I'll always try to get something I know I like
fixed before buying something new.

You may hear that you need a more modern DAC because 24/192, SACD, DoP,
etc. but remember your trusty old SB3 doesn't go higher than 24/48.

Sounds like the Numerik has served you well over the years!

Since you're already with the Squeezebox system, I would personally see
if I can find a good used SB Touch at a reasonable price and listen to
that for a little bit. It's an objective improvement over the SB3 and I
suspect it would sound very good as is compared to the Numerik. (BTW:
Was this the old Numerik with the original PCM63 DAC or the newer
PCM1702?)

This will then open up the opportunity to collect high-res music all the
way to 24/192 (with Triode's firmware) using SPDIF or some USB DACs.
Plenty of time to consider what DAC you want to use for the next 20
years :-).

I can recommend the Beresford DACs as a replacement option.
www.homehifi.co.uk - I have a selection and fine the Bushmaster (mk1 in
my case) and excellent DAC.

+1
Beresford makes very fine sounding DACs at reasonable prices.
