Discussion:
Another observation about the Benchmark DAC1

Well, actually more an observation about people...

For several years, the DAC1 was generally regarded as some kind of gold
standard for accuracy in DACs. For sure, some people didn't care for its
sonic character (while others loved it), but as far as I recall nobody
ever questioned its engineering.

And now all of a sudden a minor flaw (which probably has little if any
relevance to its performance when listening to normal music programme)
has been revealed, and it seems to me that people who were previously
ecstatic about how wonderful it was have consigned it to the scrap
heap.

I look forward to shedloads of DAC1s on eBay at knockdown prices.

Clive,
I hope that doesn't happen and I don't see any reason for that to
happen. I think it's a great DAC-pre and I have no plans to replace my
DAC1 HDR.

To bad now several people that claimed the DAC1 sounds sterile and
lacking of good sound just link to such results showing clipping.
On the other hand Benchmark marketing deserves a compliment on this
improvement for the DAC2 and giving reason for an upgrade.

The DACs that are "not sterile" most likely have the same DSP headroom.

I will make it clear in the first post of the PFM thread about the
generic nature of the issue. Ta,

Planned obsolescence based on technical improvements even if it's likely
not all that perceptible.

I have updated the original PFM post again, to make it clear the issues
occur under extreme conditions.

"The DAC1 (Pre/HDR) is a high performing DAC (-pre) under normal
operating conditions. With the following tweaks the DAC1 is a high
performing DAC (-pre) under any and all conditions."

For DAC1 owners, I have added advice about XLR outputs in the original
PFM thread: http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/showthread.php?t=137152

I am still using the DAC1 because it's a very good DAC-pre when set up
as described.
