Alas my Transporter has died and I am looking for a replacement, I
mostly stream Pandora. Does anyone know how the Marantz NA6005
compares?

Bluetooth streams in lossy compression, so it's no replacement for a
transporter. Get a Paspberry Pi with Hifiberry, connect it to a good DAC
and then hook it up to your system.

Agreed but if one is only streaming Pandora, which streams low bit rate
lossy, then both the Marantz unit and the Transporter are total
overkill. And if one is going the Marantz unit to stream losslessly from
one's computer, well good luck with getting it and the worthless DLNA

DLNA 1.5 certified for streaming music wirelessly from compatible
computers and network-attached storage (NAS) drives
Really, when will everyone just admit that DLNA is a very, very bad
joke.

I'm sorry - I feel your pain...

I did some experimenting for when my Transporter dies (not yet,
thankfully). This is what I ended up putting together:

- Raspberry Pi 2
- USB Wifi dongle
- MicroSD Card (=> 4GB is fine)
- IQaudIO Pi-DAC+ (RCA out + decent headphone out) (GBP30)
- IQaudIO PiCASE+ (GBP15)
- PiCorePlayer (Free)
-

No soldering required. I just put it all together and it works fine.

HTH,

Rick

absolutely brilliant! any chance you might post a photo of the finished
product?

As an alternative (slightly cheaper) have a look at HiFiBerry version.
Pi, DAC, case & card costs about £70. I didn't need wifi or charger.

To give an idea of scale - on top of the Transporter:
18765

Front:
18766

Left side (Ethernet and 4 USB):
18767

Back (from left bottom - Power in; ;HDMI; Audio out 3.5 from Pi. Top -
RCA out from DAC; Audio out 3.5 from DAC):
18768

Right (MicroSD slot):
18769

The Pi boots from the MicroSD card, so if you get a couple of extra
cards you can have 'SqueezePlug' (http://www.squeezeplug.eu/) on one,
Volumio on another etc. and choose what player you want today.

IQaudio send all the screws and spacers that you need with the DAC.

Rick

HTH,
Rick
Thanks! Now that I see it I would say that's it's a DIY Squeezebox
Receiver. Question: since you have it sitting atop a Transporter do you
use the Transporter's DAC instead of the Pi's internal DAC?

As far as I can see, the Pi-DAC only has analogue outputs, so you can't
feed the TP's DAC from it. Same appears to be the case for the HiFiBerry
DAC. Or have I missed something?

EDIT: Just seen that HiFiBerry do another product called the DIGI+ that
has SPDIF and Toslink outputs.
Thanks Clive!

Since all this DIY stuff looks like fun, perhaps I'll dip my toes into
the DIY waters this winter

You're right - it is DIY-ish. Certainly not audio jewellery. It only has
analogue out, so isn't plugged into the TP - I put it on there to give
you an idea of scale.

I think that you would enjoy dipping your toes into the DIY waters. The
Pi ecosystem is very rich, with good soundcards (IQaudio, HiFiBerry
etc), and good players (piCorePlayer, SqueezePlug, Volumio etc) and
mostly at commodity prices (or free).

Enjoy!

Got a new in the box black Transporter with knob on EBay for 750. It may
be overkill for Pandora, but I love it. Hope this one lasts longer than
5 years, I suspect by that time they will really be hard to find.Sounds
way better than streaming it through my Roku box.
