Hey guys,
I'm sure much of the discussion about noise is "old hat" but could be
interesting for some.

I tried out the recently released optical USB 3 cable and ran some
measurements. Worked well as a way to reduce noise from the computer
affecting my pre-amp's analogue input. May be of use to some of you out
there if you have noise issues!

I understand that this Corning cable does not provide true galvanic
isolation (which can be essential in resolving some system noise issues)
due to some power wiring that follows the glass fibre signal conduit.

Another kind of USB device that may provide this kind of isolation may
be those devices known as "USB over CAT5 extenders" such as these:
http://www.tripplite.com/product/usb-over-cat5-extenders/870. Since they
don't have a separate power supply at the far end, as they stand they
may not provide full galvanic isolation, it might be possible to
determine which wires in the CAT cable are carrying power, and cut them
and insert a separate USB power supply for the far end.

This device has remote separate USB power and may provide better
isolation (or not):

This unit claims to run at 480 bps and also has an external power
supply:
