Singer-songwriter and musician Neil Young said on Wednesday he won’t
allow his music to be streamed any more, not because of disputes over
royalties, but rather over poor sound quality.

Looks like Pono isn't selling well enough without a little more help...
;-)

While at the same time being totally OK with being played over vinyl, FM
radio and cassette, I assume...

I definitely think this topic belongs here given the fact that Young's
"message" has taken so much foothold in the audiophile world... Amazing
how many articles dedicated to Pono in Stereophile over the months!

As usual, Neil Young should not be handed a mic to talk about sound
quality. The fact that he recommended using the Klipsh R6 headphone with
the Pono in his video interview with Leo Laporte is enough to tell me
that his high frequency hearing loss is likely significant (and I own
both)! Sad to see this happening to a music legend... I bet you
Stereophile and the like will be distancing themselves from him soon
since the streaming music industry won't be wanting to pay a few bills
:).

To be fair to Mr. Young on many, if not most, of the free music
streaming services the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired since
they then to lossy files encoded at 128kps or less and these files often
sound inferior to higher bit lossy files (192kps and above). Add in the
cheap headphones, cheap earbuds, crappy laptop, computer and bluetooth
speakers powered by even crappier amps and less than optimal sound is
pretty much guaranteed. That being said, the paid (i.e. subscription)
music streaming service tend to use high bit rate lossy or lossless
(flac) files and these services, when coupled with good headphones or
speakers powered by good amps can and do sound quite good. Young's
failure to differentiate between these two very different streaming
options brings into question the real reasons behind his actions
(Pono?).

And inferior to AM radio and 8-track tape?

Don't put words in my mouth :)

Young is just being a real audiophile in that he is comparing the sound
of something from his (distant) past to the sound of something in the
present. Kind of like when an audiophile reviewer compares the sound of
the piece of equipment under review with his memory of the sound a
different piece of equipment. Highly scientific.

How about an 8 tape being listened to via AM radio?

I tried to do a rough estimate of how much time good ole Niel has spent
standing in front of giant stacks of speakers blaring away at zillions
of dB and cross-referencing that with the kind of permanent ear damage
that can be expected from that kind of a life.

Its possible that streaming audio doesn't sound as good to him as AM
radio and 8 track, but for the reason he seems to want to presume.

But things *did* sound better back when I was young!

So when will the Pono store have the recording of your glorious singing
at 24bit/192kHz, of course, available for purchase and download?

I think that is banned by the Geneva Convention...
