Happy Memorial Day long weekend to the American friends!

Gonna go on vacation with the family to San Diego next week so hoping
for some nice sun, heat, good food, etc... compared to Vancouver (not
bad, just not hot enough for me this time of year!).

Anyhow, another blog dropping before I head off this weekend... Hey I
like software, GUI, features, etc. Just don't tell me "bit-perfect"
sounds different! :-)

Wondering, other than foobar, JPLAY (looks very strange), JRiver are
there other "audiophile" players on Windows to consider?

foobar2000 doesn't claim to be audiophile from a sound quality point if
view. In fact it's FAQ points out that its sound quality should be the
same as any (non broken) player.

That's why it's what I use on the PC...

And yes, jplay is strange. Most likely audiophile smoke and mirrors.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the belief that low buffer size in
JPLAY somehow makes a difference... I can see how latencies can be
important when mixing or studio work - but with straight playback, why
would you care? Just set it to a point which prevents buffer under runs
and you'll be good, right?

One of those things I might spend some time on in a couple weeks...

Here's an example thread on this. Dude claims it's the "most analogue
sounding digital I have heard". Wonder if running the buffer so low may
be inducing extra noise occasionally to make it sound "analogue" but not
damaging enough to be obvious audio drop out?

http://jplay.eu/forum/jplay/newbie-question-about-buffer-size-and-sound-quality/

Strange indeed...

Likewise, the cPlay guys obsess over stuff like this as well...

Is your partner allowing you to take your equipment along so you can do
some more measurements? ;)

Testing I find is a nice distraction in the Man Cave after work and the
kids are down every few days. Definitely not for holiday time :-) .

Actually, I think I'm pretty close to satisfying my curiosity around
many of the questions and insecurities I've had over the years with
audiophilia... At least with this line level stuff like DAC, cables,
effects of WiFi, attributions of jitter, software player effects, PCM
vs. DSD output...

It's been fun to put up a blog to demystify this stuff and as I say in
most of my posts, I'm happy if someone can point me in another direction
if my conclusions are false - so long as there's evidence. Took some
flak on some of the audiophile forums for threatening the sacred cow -
like the importance of $$$ cables. But in the end, I see they got
nothin' of substance.
